Below are the general requirements and restriction rules for performing Umrah. Please note that they may vary with them and you are advised to always check with your local travel agency or Saudi Government official portals for the latest updates.
The fundamental acts of Umrah must be fulfilled in order to mark the completion of the journey. If any of the 4 Umrah rituals ( Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i and Halq/Taqsir) are missed, the Umrah becomes invalid. Please note that these rituals must be performed in the right sequence.
Other than the rituals of Umrah, there are certain (Wajib) acts that must be performed correctly and if any among them is missed, then one needs to compensate for that. The Umrah remains valid, though. These acts include making an intention of Umrah at Miqat (specified boundary) or earlier, and avoiding all the prohibitions while one remains in the state of Ihram.
One cannot cut or shave hair or nails while in the state of Ihram. Men cannot wear stitched clothing that fits their body, including the undergarments and shirts/pants. Using perfumes or scented products is also not allowed and one cannot establish any sexual relation or actions leading to them. Also, no hunting or animals or damaging of plants is allowed in the Haram area.
All hotel bookings and transport arrangements need to be confirmed before the issuance of the visa and the Saudi authorities only accept licensed hotels and transport services.
Meningococcal vaccine ( ACYWI35) is a must within the time frame of 3-5 years and other vaccines like COVID-19 or yellow fever may also be required. Health insurance for medical emergencies is a must for all pilgrims.
Umrah visa issuance or entry to Makkah may be suspended during the Hajj season. Umrah can only be performed with an approved permit (Tasreeh) that must be acquired before you enter the Grand Mosque or perform Tawaf.
The travel agency or Umrah service provider must be registered via the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and pilgrims should not deal with unlicensed agents or companies. Mahram Requirement: Before, it was not allowed for female travellers to travel without a Mahram (husband or close male relative she cannot marry). However, the restriction has been removed by the Saudi Government and the modern rules state that women can now perform Umrah without a Mahram as long as safety is ensured.
Menstruation: If a woman is menstruating, she cannot perform Tawaf or enter the mosque. She can still recite duas, indulge in dhikr and make an intention for Umrah. Menstruation doesn’t stop them from entering Ihram; however, they cannot perform Tawaf until they become pure.
Clothing: No special colour clothing is required for women. However, they must wear a modest non-revealing dress that is loose and not transparent. The face and hands should not be covered in the Ihram as niqaab and gloves are not allowed. If they still want to cover, they can lower the scarf or veil over the face in front of men, without it touching the skin.
Intention (Niyyah): Female pilgrims should make the intention at Miqat by reciting:
At the Miqat, make the intention:
“Labbayka ‘Umrah” (O Allah, here I am for Umrah).
Then recite the Talbiyah in a soft voice rather than saying it loudly:
“Labbayka Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni‘mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika lak.”
Tawaf: Women need to perform seven rounds of the Kaaba in an anti-clockwise direction and should not do raml (fast walking) or idhitba (exposing the shoulder) as these rules are just for men. Avoid crowding near men and maintain modesty throughout. After Tawaf, they can pray 2 rak’ahs behind the Maqam e Ibrahim, if possible.
Sa‘i: During Sa’i, women are required to maintain a natural pace as opposed to men, who need to run between the green markets. They can also recite du’a and dhikr and maintain modesty while moving.
Halq or Taqsir: Women don’t have to shave their heads in this ritual, like men. Instead, they should cut hair about a fingertip’s length (1-2 cm) from the end. If they are in a group, each woman can cut her own or another woman’s hair in private.
Once the hair is cut, the Ihram ends and Umrah is marked complete for women. They can resume to normal activities (normal clothes and marital relations, etc.).
